SC restrains Mayawati govt to develop further Ambedkar memorial

The Supreme Court refused to permit the Mayawati Government to spruce
up the Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial in Lucknow in view of the upcoming
death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar.
A bench, comprising Justices H S Bedi and J M Panchal, told the Uttar
Pradesh government counsel that the application would be heard on
November 30, the date already fixed for hearing of the case.
The Mayawati government has also filed another application praying to
the apex court to lift the blanket ban imposed on the construction of
memorials and statues of Dalit leaders, including her own, in
September this year.
State chief secretary Atul Kumar Gupta, to whom the contempt of court
notice was issued by the apex court for violating its order directing
the UP government to stop all constructions in Lucknow, has tendered
an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the state government was pulled up by the apex court for
wasting huge public money to the tune of Rs 2,600 crore on the
construction of parks and memorials on 105 acres of land in the state
capital.
The Mayawati government has also spent crores of rupees on the statues
of elephants, the election symbol of ruling BSP.
The court has also stayed all constructions in the Dr B R Ambedkar
Memorial Park in Noida.
It will consider all these applications and affidavit on Novemer 30.
