HC reserves order in Patan gangrape case

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court has reserved its order on bail pleas
of the six teachers accused in the Patan gangrape case. They have been
accused of raping a 19-year old Dalit student in the Patan DIET-PTC,
and awarded life term for multiple gangrape by a fast-track court in
Patan.
A division bench of Justice AL Dave and Justice JC Upadhyay completed
the hearing on the petitions by the convicted teachers on Monday and
reserved their verdict.
The fast track court had sentenced Manish Parmar, Mahendra Prajapati,
Ashwin Parmar, Kiran Patel, Suresh Patel and Atul Patel after
assessing 25 witnesses and scrutinising heaps of documents, including
forensic analysis and daily attendance reports of staff and students
at the institute.
The trial against the teachers lasted six months and lawyers
representing the accused posed nearly 2,000 questions to the victim.
However, the girl stood by the facts she had narrated in the police
complaint.
The convicted teachers tried hard to disrupt the trial by repeatedly
approaching the high court on various issues, but they did not succeed
and on March 6, judge SC Srivanstava awarded life imprisonment and
asked each of the teachers to pay Rs 10,000 to the student towards
compensation.
After their conviction, the six challenged the verdict in the high
court and sought bail pending the appeal.
