Ilaiah plays the contrarian again
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: The Telugu translation of 'Post-Hindu India' written by
Professor Kancha Ilaiah was released here on Wednesday. The book
highlights the contributions of the marginalised sections in the
society to science and technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Kancha Ilaiah waded directly into another
controversy, supporting the demand for a ban on the Bhagavad Gita in
Russia.

"I have been insisting that it is the most violent piece of mythology
written and no wonder that the Russians found the writings extremist
in nature," said the director of CSSEIP at the Maulana Azad National
Urdu University (MANUU).

The Lokpal committee members were also not spared by Ilaiah as he said
that the demand for representation from each section of minorities was
not adhered to in the formation of an impartial body.

"Mayawati is the new icon indicative of a post-Hindu nation where
power lies in the hands of a Dalit majority," said the writer who
highlights the contrast between 'faith' as ordained by Hinduism and
labour and know-how practised by the subaltern classes in the society.

In the same breath, he said he had never prayed to God. "But I
dedicate the book to Gods of different faiths and ideologies
including Karl Marx," he said. Titled 'Hindu Mataananthara Bhartha'
the volume has been translated by Prabhakar Mandara who is a Sahitya
Akademi awardee. The translation is brought out by EMSCO publishers .

Kancha's post Hindu-India in Telugu now

December 29, 2011
DC
Hyderabad

The Telugu translation of Kancha Ilaiah's bestseller Post Hindu-India
was launched in the city on Wednesday. Incidentally, the English
version of the book has become quite a subject for debate across the
country and abroad. The translation is pu-blished under the title
Hindu Mataananthara Bharatha Desham. "This is the first book in
India's scholarly history that shows that Hi-nduism has lost many
regions to other religions because of its opposition to labour and
science.

The book takes a journey through the productive and scientific life of
tribals, dalits, dhobis, barbers, iron and gold smiths, toddy tappers,
tillers, baniyas and brahmins. It shows how there is enormous science,
technology and engineering in the life of the productive classes. But
that scien-ce wasn't and still isn't respected in the temples or in
the teachings of the Hindu mythological hero's life," said Kancha
Ilaiah. M. Prab-hakar, who translated the book said that the book
reveals how the caste system was established and consolidated due to
the negation of science and human eq-uality in our country.

[ZESTCaste] The Jat factor may spell trouble for Cong in western UP

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Lucknow/The-Jat-factor-may-spell-trouble-for-Cong-in-western-UP/Article1-788433.aspx

The Jat factor may spell trouble for Cong in western UP
M Hasan, Hindustan Times
Lucknow, December 28, 2011

By not accepting the demand of RLD, its ally, for OBC reservation for
the Jats at central level, the Congress is in danger of playing into
the hands of BSP before assembly elections. The RLD was expecting
the Congress to accede to this demand in view of the Centre's
announcement of 4.5% reservation for the Muslims.

UP chief minister Mayawati, who is also president of the BSP, had
written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in September 2011, supporting
the demand for Jat reservation.

Now there is apprehension in the RLD that this can lead to trouble for
the new alliance in western UP. The well-entrenched Jat community,
with a population of approximately 3 million, has been agitating in UP
for the last two years for reservation in central government jobs.

"(Their) non-inclusion could be damaging in western UP," a senior RLD
leader said.

However, after the meeting of civil aviation minister Ajit Singh, also
RLD president, with Union home minister P Chidambaram last week, party
leaders are hopeful the issue would be resolved after elections. "Had
it been done now, it would have largely helped the party," the RLD
leader said.

While the RLD has over the years thrived on the Jat-Muslim support
base in western UP, the BSP has been making efforts to make a dent in
its ground and bring the community closer to the Jatavs, who are
Dalits.

Even though the RLD and Congress are expecting electoral gains after
their alliance, reports from western UP indicate there is simmering
discontent in the Jat community on account of this.

In 2000, the state government, then run by the BJP, had included the
Jats in the list of backward communities and later the central
government did so for the community just in Rajasthan. In view of
educational and social similarities of the community in both the
states, the Jats of UP have been demanding inclusion in the central
quota list.

The Jats had resorted to a train blockade between Lucknow and Delhi
near Amroha in March 2011.

In order to win over the community, the chief minister formed three
districts – Prabudha Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar and Bhim Nagar – in
western UP in September 2011.

CM, Ambedkar grandson meet over Indu Mills
Sandeep Ashar, TNN | Dec 29, 2011, 03.02AM IST

MUMBAI: In a bid to resolve the controversy over occupation of Indu
Mills in Prabhadevi by members of the Republican Sena, CM Prithviraj
Chavan held a discussion with the outfit's leader, Anandraj Ambedkar,
on Wednesday evening.

Senior ministers in the state cabinet, including R R Patil, Shivaji
Moghe, Varsha Gaikwad and Nitin Raut, senior home department officials
were present on the occasion.

Chavan urged Anandraj, who is Dr Ambedkar's grandson, to withdraw his
supporters from the mill. He added that there were plans to lead a
delegation, which will include various Republican party factions, to
meet the PM Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the demand to release
the mill land on December 30. Sources said Anandraj was more or less
convinced with the assurances. Even as Republican Sena supporters have
planned a morcha on December 29, sources pointed to a possibility of
them vacating the land on the same day itself.- Sandeep Ashar

Mumbai: In a bid to resolve the controversy over occupation of
Prabhadevi-based Indu mill land by members of the Republican Sena,
chief minister Prithviraj Chavan held a discussion with the outfit's
leader Anandraj Ambedkar on Wednesday evening.

Senior ministers in the state cabinet including RR Patil, Shivaji
Moghe, Varsha Gaikwad and Nitin Raut, senior home department officials
were present on the occasion.

Republic Sena members forcibly entered the mill land on December 6 in
support of the demand for the release of the land for a Dr Babasaheb
Ambedkar memorial and have been in possession since.

The state government had last week informed a bench of the Bombay High
Court, which is hearing a matter in this regard, that it would
persuade the protestors to vacate the premises on or before December
29. It has said that forcible eviction would be undertaken otherwise.
Anandraj is Dr Ambedkar's grandson

Chavan urged Ambedkar to withdraw his supporters from the mill. He
said that the government was pushing the centre for the release of the
mill land. He said that there were plans to lead a delegation, which
will include various Republican party factions, to meet Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh over the demand on December 30. Patil said that the
home department would be forced to take action against the supporters
if they did not evict voluntarily. The home department has taken the
responsibility of not allowing any other faction to encroach on the
mill land.

Reliable sources said that Anandraj was more or less convinced with
the assurances. Even as Republican Sena supporters have planned a
morcha on December 29, sources pointed to a possibility of them
vacating the land on the same day itself. Patil might visit the
protestors and make a statement on government's behalf.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati sacks two more ministers

Mayawati sacks two more ministers

Express news service Posted: Dec 29, 2011 at 0039 hrs
Lucknow Continuing her efforts to refurbish her image, Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday sacked two more ministers and
also dropped them as party candidates for the Assembly elections.
Akabar Hussain was Minister of State for Alternative Sources of Energy
with independent charge while Yashpal Singh was Minister of State for
Science and Technology.

On December 25, she had sacked her four ministers — Rangnath Mishra,
Awadhesh Verma, Rajpal Tyagi and Hari Om — and also denied them ticket
to contest the Assembly elections.

Sources said Akabar Hussain is already in touch with Rashtriya Lok Dal
(RLD) to contest the election from his Kundarki seat in Moradabad
district. A fifth-time MLA, Akabar Hussain was first elected to the
Assembly in 1977 as a nominee of the then Janata Party. In 1980, he
was elected to the state Assembly as Janata Dal(S), headed by veteran
socialist Raj Narain. Later, he joined the Janata Dal and contested as
its nominee in 1991 and 1996. He joined the BSP after wining polls in
2007.

Yashpal Singh, who represents Seyora seat of Bijnore district, was
elected to the state Assembly for the first time on a BSP ticket in
2007. The party has now decided to field former BJP MLA V P Singh from
this seat, it is learnt.

The BSP has already denied ticket to more than 70 MLAs, but there has
been no formal announcement.

Mayawati, who is also party president, has called a meeting of party's
coordinators of western UP on Thursday to discuss the names of
candidates. She has already cleared her party candidates for eastern
UP. Sources in the BSP said the party has decided to field a good
number of Muslim candidates in western UP and Mayawati would discuss
every name during her one-to-one meeting with the coordinators.

"She is worried over the party's prospects in western UP after the
formation of the alliance between the Congress and the RLD," a party
leader said.

The BSP is likely to release its final list of candidates in the first
week of January. After that, Mayawati would first undertake a tour of
Punjab and Uttarakhand for campaigning before concentrating on UP.

Dalits to welcome New Year with nationwide bandh

Announce stir against caste-based discrimination‚ murder

Added At: 2011-12-28 5:04 PM

THT ONLINE

KATHMANDU: In the wake of murder of a Dalit man in Kalikot, the Dalit
bodies affiliated with the main political parties have announced a
phase-wise agitation including general shutdown to protest the
caste-based discrimination against the Dalit communities.

Organising a press meet in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the Dalit
organisations announced Nepal bandh for January 1. They said they were
compelled to take up the stern measures as the government remained
indifferent towards their five-point demand put forth earlier.

The Dalit Caucus has been obstructing the House business to protest
the murder of Manbire Sunar in Kalikot. They have demanded a martyr
status to the deceased and relief package to the bereaved family.

Sunar, who belonged the blacksmith community, was beaten to death by
two upper-caste men for he entered the kitchen of a hotel they ran.
The Dalit communities have been sporadically imposing strikes in
various cities in the western Nepal.

As per the agitation programme, the Dalit bodies will impose a
chakkajam across the country from 10 am to 11 am tomorrow morning.

They will hold an interaction with the civil society and the rights
activists on Friday, and take out a torch rally on Saturday evening,
on the eve of the general shutdown.

They said killing a Dalit for entering the kitchen of so-called upper
caste and caste-based discrimination matter of shame, urging the
government to make the country free from untouchability and implement
the laws related to any such discrimination effectively.

Dalit beaten to death: Community shuts three districts in protest

DANG, DEC 27 -

Various Dalit organisations enforced a general strike in Dang, Rolpa
and Syangja districts on Monday to protest the killing of a Dalit
youth in Kalikot district.

Normal life was greatly affected in Dang as transportation came to a
halt while market places, industries and educational institutes
remained closed due to the banda. The protest crippled life in Rolpa
and Syangja districts as well. Banda enforcers demanded strong action
against the guilty and compensation for the victim's family.

On December 10, 31-year-old Manbir Sunar was beaten to death by two
men in an eatery in Kalikot. Under the influence of alcohol, Mim
Bahadur Shahi and Dip Bahadur Shahi had severely thrashed Sunar as the
latter lit a cigarette in the oven.

REPUBLICA
KATHMANDU, Dec 29: A five-point agreement has been inked between the
government, the Joint Dalit Struggle Committee (JDSC) and the Dalit
Lawmakers' Forum (DLF) lifting the parliament obstruction by the
caucus of Dalit lawmakers over the last two weeks.

The deal was struck during a meeting, held in the presence of Prime
Minister Baburam Bhattarai, between Peace and Reconstruction Minister
Satya Pahadi and representatives from the agitating JDSC and DLF at
the peace and reconstruction ministry in Singha Durbar on Thursday.

Now, PM Bhattarai will apprise the parliament of the agreement during
the House meeting later in the day, informed Parshuram Ramtel, a
Maoist lawmaker, who was present in the meeting.

House proceedings on December 16, 22 and 27 had been obstructed by the
caucus of Dalit lawmakers protesting over the killing of Manbir Sunar,
a Dalit youth, in Jubitha-4 of Kalikot district on December 14. He had
been trashed to death for intruding into the kitchen of an ´upper
caste´ hotelier.

As per the deal, the government would take stern action against those
involved in Sunar´s killing and make arrangements for providing free
education to the deceased´s children till higher secondary level.

In the agreement, the government has also pledged to form a taskforce,
on the recommendation of which the deal states the government would
decide whether or not to declare Sunar a martyrs.

Likewise, the government has expressed commitment to form panels at
central and local levels to ensure the effective implementation of law
against untouchability and violence against Dalits.

The deal also states that the government would take initiatives to
bring to justice the culprits involved different incidents of violence
against Dalits in several districts including Kaski, Tanahun, Dailekh,
Siraha, Darchula and Baitadi.

Minister Pahadi, UCPN-Maoist lawmaker Tilak Pariyar, CPN UML´s Jeetu
Gautam and NC´s Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma, among others, are the

their demand on the issue of murder of Manbir Sunar—is inking an
agreement on Thursday morning with the government, which indicates the
withdraw of all the programmes of protest.

It has been understood that the Dalit caucus has already reached Prime
Minister Office, Singha Durbar to sign the agreement.

The Dalit caucus has demanded that the government declare Sunar a
martyr, form a judicial commission to probe into the incident, take
stern action against the culprits and provide compensation to the
victim's family.

Though Tuesday's Cabinet meeting decided to provide Rs 1 million to
Sunar's family and set up a mechanism at the Office of the Prime
Minister to monitor and address Dalits' concerns, members of the Dalit
caucus blamed the government for taking the decision without
consulting them.

Sunar was thrashed to death on December 10 by two men for allegedly
entering the kitchen of a so-called upper caste family to light his
cigarette.
