Will demolish parks, memorials made by Maya, says Mulayam

Lucknow : Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today said that he
will lead the "jail bharo" agitation of the party in Lucknow on
January 19 and will also court arrest.
Addressing the party workers after paying homage to socialist leader
Raj Narain on his 24th death anniversary, the SP chief reiterated his
resolve to get the parks and memorials of Dalit icons demolished and
replace it with schools and hospitals. "I have chosen Lucknow to lead
the jail bharo agitation since the state capital is the symbol of the
arbitrary conduct of the BSP-led government," he said.

"Mayawati has occupied over 2,500 acres of public land in the state
capital and all political parties are conspicuous by their silence on
this issue," he added. "Various parks and memorials have been
constructed from the hard-earned money of the poor people of the state
and we will give these assets back to the people by constructing
schools and hospitals in place of the memorials for Dalit icons," said
Yadav. "The schools and hospitals will be named after the Dalit
icons," he added.

Exhorting the party cadres to follow the path shown by Raj Narain, who
fought against Emergency during Indira Gandhi's tenure, the SP chief
said: "Raj Narain fought against all kinds of injustice — be it state
repression or the anti-people conduct of the government. You can fight
the BSP government only by following the ideals shown by the great
socialist leader."

Terming the BSP government as an epitome of arbitrary conduct, bad
governance and corruption, Yadav recalled his agitation for the
sugarcane farmers after the police firing at Ramkola in Deoria
district during the first BJP regime in 1992. "Ramkola agitation
remains a milestone in the history of the SP, where I was arrested and
jailed, but the government had to relent and accept the demands of the
farmers," he said.
