MRPS decries attack on Sankara rao, plans rally
Dec 23 ,2011 13:13 PM

Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) president Manda Krishna
Madiga said his organization would undertake a rally on Dec 27
protesting against the attack on Minister Sankara Rao at NTR Nagar
near LB Nagar in Hyderabad a few days ago.

Alleging that Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy's son was involved in
the attack, Manda Krishna told journalists today that the police have
not taken any action against the attackers till now.

"There is no doubt that Home Minister's son is involved in the
attack," he said. Manda Krishna said his organization would take out
the rally on Dec 27 from the residence of Minister Sankara Rao to the
spot where attack was staged on the minister.

MRPS demonstrates against attack

Manda Krishna and several other leaders along with hundreds of MRPS
activists earlier demonstrated at the Basheerbagh Chaurasta and tried
to take out a 'self respect rally' but police arrested all the leaders
and activists and shifted them to the police station.

"It is a shame on part of police that they have not yet arrested those
who attacked Sankara rao but are trying to stop our peaceful rally and
demonstration. (JUBS)

[ZESTCaste] 'Sabitha's son behind attack on Shankar Rao'

http://andhraheadlines.com/state/font-color336699bhm%E2%80%99s-son-behind-attack-on-shankar-rao-mrpsbfont-4-93743.html

'Sabitha's son behind attack on Shankar Rao'

Hyderabad, Dec 23: Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi founder-president
Manda Krishna Madiga here on Friday strongly suspected latent hand of
the Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy's son in the violent attack on
the Handlooms and Textiles Minister Dr P. Shankar Rao on the city
outskirts recently.

Speaking to mediapersons, Krishna Madiga said that the police have
failed to arrest those behind the attack on the minister even three
days after the incident. He charged that the police remained calm
because the Home Minister's son was the brain behind the attack on the
Handlomms and Textiles Minister. The MRPS leader said that they would
organize protest rallies and dharnas on December 26 against the
dastardly attack on Dr Shankar Rao. On December 27, they would take
out a rally from the residence of Dr Shankar Rao to the spot where the
minister was attacked, he added.

Today, Krishna Madiga organized "Self-Respect Rally" from Dr Ambedkar
statue at Basheerbagh under the auspices of the MRPS in protest
against the attack on the Dalit minister. However, the police foiled
the rally at the starting point and took the MRPS leaders into custody
and shifted them to the Nampally Police Station. The MRPS activists
resisted the police and pushed each other. The protestors lied on the
road in front of the police van when the police tried to shift them to
police station. However, the police personnel forcibly lifted the
protestors and herded them into the vehicle.

[ZESTCaste] MGR, Periyar remembered across Madurai & Trichy

MGR, Periyar remembered across Madurai & Trichy
TNN Dec 25, 2011, 12.39AM IST

MADURAI: Poignancy marked the death anniversaries of AIADMK founder M
G Ramachandran fondly called by his followers as Puratchi Thalaivar
and Dravidian stalwart Periyar E V Ramasamy Naicker, in Madurai on
Saturday.

Even as politicians clamoured to pose for photographs when they
garlanded the statues of MGR across the city, a number of his fans -
rickshaw pullers, auto drivers, waiters in hotels among others paid
obeisance to their leader by garlanding his statues.

Like 40-year-old Balu, a diehard fan of MGR from Viraganur, also
tonsured his head to pay respects to his icon. Not just a leader or
icon, MGR is considered by his fans as demigod. The fans had stuck
posters all across the city a week back itself depicting MGR as a god.
"December 24th 1987 is the day our beloved leader Puratchi Thalaivar
MGR left us". Let us pay respects to him on his 24th death
anniversary," said one poster that declared him in bold fonts as "God
in Heaven."

Another poster called him as "Leader who won time." Besides fans
associations, a number of individuals too had printed such posters
that were found across the city.

"I have been tonsuring my head every year on puratchi thalaivar's
memorial day," says Balu. Though he seldom remembers the days when MGR
was alive, he developed a liking for the former chief minister after
seeing his films. To pay their respects, as many as five theatres
screened blockbuster films of MGR. In fact, the leader has so many
fans in temple city that one or the other theatre continued to screen
one of his films throughout the year.

Members of various political parties garlanded the statue of Periyar
too. District DMK secretary G Thalapathy garlanded the statue of the
rationalist leader at Alagarkovil Road, while many AIADMK leaders also
followed suit. The occasion was celebrated in style all across the
state.

[ZESTCaste] IRS Q3 2011: Top 10 Dailies in Uttar Pradesh

IRS Q3 2011: Top 10 Dailies in Uttar Pradesh

Hindustan and The Times of India are the only two newspapers with
growth in this quarter in the largest Hindi speaking state

BestMediaInfo Bureau | Delhi | December 26, 2011

Unlike the last round of survey when 9 out of top 10 dailies had
registered growth in Uttar Pradesh, IRS Q3 has seen 8 newspapers
losing readership. Hindustan and The Times of India are the only two
newspapers who have added new readers in this quarter.

The No.1 daily of Uttar Pradesh 'Dainik Jagran' remains a distant
leader in the state; however, the daily has registered a slight
decline in the current survey. The daily has recorded an AIR of 89.81
lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 90.07 lakh in the previous quarter
and 88.15 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

The second largest newspaper in the state 'Amar Ujala' has also seen a
loss of a few readers in IRS Q3 2011. Its current AIR stands at 70.21
lakh against 70.55 lakh in the last round of survey and 69.46 lakh in
IRS Q1 2011.

At No.3 is Hindi daily 'Hindustan' which has maintained its growth
rate in UP. The daily has recorded an AIR of 38.84 lakh in IRS Q3 2011
compared with 38.06 lakh in the previous round of survey and 36.76
lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

'Amar Ujala Compact' has registered a marginal loss in the third
quarter of IRS 2011; however, the daily remains firm at No.4 position.
The compact daily from Amar Ujala has recorded an AIR of 9.59 lakh in
IRS Q3 2011 against 10.05 lakh in the previous quarter and 9.01 lakh
in IRS Q1 2011.

'Aj' has lost a big chunk of its readers in the current survey. By
losing more than 10 per cent readers, the daily has recorded an AIR of
6.9 lakh in IRS Q3 2011 against 7.68 lakh in the previous quarter and
7.46 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

At No.6, Rashtriya Sahara has also lost around 5% readers in this
quarter. The newspaper has an AIR of 6.62 lakh in IRS Q3 2011 compared
with 6.92 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 and 6.35 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

'The Times of India' has added a few readers in this quarter to take
its AIR at 5.58 lakh in IRS Q3 2011 against 5.52 lakh in the previous
quarter and 5.42 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Dainik Jagran Group's English daily 'I-Next' has lost about 10 per
cent readers in the current survey. Its current AIR stands at 4.57
lakh compared with 5.06 lakh in the previous quarter and 4.75 lakh in
IRS Q1 2011.

India's No.2 English daily 'Hindustan Times' has climbed up one
position in Uttar Pradesh; however, it has lost a few readers in this
quarter of IRS 2011. HT has an AIR of 2.8 lakh in IRS Q3 2011 against
2.98 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 and 2.86 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Published from Agra and Jhansi, the afternoon tabloid "Daily Life
Assistance (DLA)" has come down to No.10 position in the state. Its
current AIR stands at 2.62 lakh against 3.17 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 and
3.47 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

————————————————————-

Average Issue Readership (AIR) of a publication is defined as the
number of readers of that publication who have claimed to have last
read it within its periodicity, i.e., last read a daily yesterday, a
weekly within the last week, a monthly within the last month, etc.

This measure is considered to be a more relevant measure of 'real' or
'regular' readership, especially for newspapers, most of which have
been read / 'consumed' as a matter of daily habit. Conventionally,
media planners even calculate and compare cost-benefits of dailies
based on the AIR figure. Hence, it is perhaps the most relevant to
study readership trends as well in terms of AIR.

[ZESTCaste] National Interest: The caste of corruption

National Interest: The caste of corruption

Shekhar Gupta Posted online: Sat Dec 24 2011, 01:50 hrs
Is there a caste or communal link to corruption and crime? Or, are
your chances of being involved (and getting caught) in corruption
cases higher as you go down the caste ladder? Nobody in his right mind
would say yes to either of these. But let's examine some facts.

Why is there a preponderance of this underclass among those charged
with corruption, or even targeted in media sting operations? Here is a
roll call: A. Raja and Mayawati (Dalit), Madhu Koda and Shibu Soren
(tribal), Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav (OBC), are all caught in
corruption or disproportionate assets cases. Faggan Singh Kulaste,
Ashok Argal and Mahavir Singh Bhagora, caught in the cash-for-votes
sting, are all SC/ST; among the BSP MPs in the cash-for-queries sting,
Narendra Kushwaha and Raja Ram Pal (who is now in the Congress) are
OBC, and Lalchandra Kol a Dalit. Of course, there are also some
illustrious upper-caste representatives in the net: Sukh Ram,
Jayalalithaa, Suresh Kalmadi. But there are far fewer of them. Could
it be that the upper crust tends to be "cleaner" as a rule, or could
it be that the system is loaded against those in the lower half of the
social pyramid? The Sachar Committee report on the condition of
Muslims also tells us that the only place where our Muslims have
numbers disproportionately high in comparison to their population is
jails. So, face the question once again: do Muslims tend to be more
criminal than Hindus, or is the system loaded against them?

For another example, look at the BJP. Two of its senior leaders were
caught on camera accepting cash. One, Dilip Singh Judeo, caught taking
Rs 9 lakh, was a mere MP, but of a high caste, and was happily
rehabilitated in the party, fielded in the election, and is now back
in Parliament. The other, Bangaru Laxman, caught taking just Rs 1
lakh, was ranked much higher in the party; he was, in fact, the
president, but much lower on the caste pyramid, a Dalit. He has been
banished and isolated and is fighting the charges in that Tehelka
sting case by himself. I am sorry to use this expression, but the
party treated him as an utter outcast even as it continued to defend
Judeo. What is the difference between the two except caste? You want
to take this argument to the judiciary? It has been loosely insinuated
by many prominent people, including by some notable members of Team
Anna, that a large number of our former chief justices have been
corrupt. But who is the only one targeted by name (however
unsubstantiated the charges)? It is Justice K.G. Balakrishnan,
currently chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and, more
importantly, India's first Dalit chief justice.

These questions are inconvenient, but can never be brushed aside in a
diverse democracy. These have become even more important now as the
political class has responded to Team Anna's Lokpal campaign by
bringing in 50 per cent reservation for lower castes and minorities.
You can say this is a cynical political ploy to counter what is, after
all, an upper-class, upper-caste, urban movement so far. But facts are
facts and there is no hiding from them. The system is much too
prejudiced, much too loaded against the underclass. Reservations may
not be the perfect solution. But how else do you ensure equity? How do
you convince this vast majority of Indians below the very top of the
social pyramid that this new all-powerful institution will be fair to
them? Or, you can flip this very same question in the context of Team
Anna. Why has this vast majority of socially and economically
vulnerable Indians been so distant from their movement? Why are the
leaders who represent them, from Lalu to Mulayam to Mayawati, so
strongly critical of the institution of Lokpal? Because the
minorities, the weaker sections, are always afraid of mass movements,
particularly when these are led by the dominant upper classes. In
these movements they see the threat of majoritarian excesses. And that
is exactly the apprehension that the political class, particularly the
UPA, has now gotten hold of.

"The upper caste, creamy layer of our society is the most prejudiced,
and yet the most dominant minority in any democracy in the world. That
is why even the person representing Mayawati on otherwise brilliant
funny-man Cyrus Broacha's show on CNN-IBN always has a blackened face
(Dalits are supposed to be dark-skinned, no?) and that is why the man
described by breathless anchors of our blue (business) channels as
India's Warren Buffett, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, sends out tweets like
this: "Don't think [Kapil] Sibal even understands the internet. This
happens when you make a lawyer an IT Minister. Like hiring Mayawati
for an item song." Of course, Mayawati could return the compliment by
gifting him a very large mirror. But can you imagine the real Warren
Buffett getting away with saying something like this about Michelle
Obama?

An interesting new turn has meanwhile taken place in the discourse
over the Lokpal bill. Whenever asked to comment on the UPA's ploy of
reservations, members of Team Anna simply say they are happy to leave
that entirely to the government. Leave something entirely to the
government? When was the last time you heard Team Anna say that?

They are doing so because the caste card, howsoever cynical, has
thrown them entirely off-balance. They are now paying for having built
such an unrepresentative upper-crust leadership, deluded perhaps by
the belief that this battle was theirs to win on Twitter, Facebook and
television channels where their interlocutors were trumpeters or
fellow travellers. They forgot that the battle for power and ideas is
fought in a democracy's parliament and within its institutions. They
started to believe their own mythology of being apolitical. They did
not realise that politics, in a democracy as diverse as ours, needs
two essential pre-requisites: ideology and inclusiveness. Abhorrence
of corruption is a universal virtue but not an ideology.

If there was an underlying ideological impulse to this movement, it
was anti-politicianism, underlined by that slogan from the early,
heady days — Mera Neta Chor Hai.

It was probably because of that philosophical abhorrence of politics,
and the give-and-take, the unending deal-making it involves, that Anna
did not set up a truly diverse and representative "Team" to begin
with. They had the wisdom and the sincerity, they thought, and
Indians, cutting across barriers of caste and religion, would be smart
enough to see it. Representative inclusiveness, they probably
believed, was part of our cynical electoral politics though that did
not stop them from having a Dalit and a Muslim girl help Anna break
his fast, making it the first time that a child was described as
"Dalit" on a public stage in a mass rally.

Leaders of Team Anna now rightly say that theirs indeed is a political
movement. But even if they assert that it is above electoral politics,
they have erred gravely in not learning from the political class and
building a representative leadership. It could have come from both
their abhorrence and ignorance of politics, from a lack of respect for
the political class, and an inability to appreciate that you need
politics to create a sense of fairness, balance and empowerment in
such a diverse society. That is the difference between Anna on the one
hand, and Gandhi and JP on the other. Both of the latter made
inclusive politics the vehicle of their revolutions. Team Anna,
instead, tried to circumvent politics, and now finds itself right in
the thick of it.

[ZESTCaste] ‘Fake’ Jhunjhunwala takes on real Shekhar Gupta

http://wearethebest.wordpress.com/2011/12/24/fake-jhunjhunwala-takes-on-the-real-shekhar-gupta/

'Fake' Jhunjhunwala takes on real Shekhar Gupta
24 December 2011

That dead-tree journalists are cut off from the digital world is
evident from the manner in which they react to blogs, tweets and
status updates that don't consider them god's gift to journalism.

Indian Express editor-in-chief Shekhar Gupta is without doubt one of
the top journalists of his generation, with a magazine, newspaper and
television profile that is the envy of most.

But even a man who has covered wars, tribal insurgencies, terrorism,
massacres, missile attacks, jihad doesn't have it all covered in the
new age, it seems.

In his weekly column today, Gupta, 57, quotes from the Twitter feed of
"Fake Jhunjhunwala", assuming it to be from the real one, the stock
broker Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.

The operative portion of Gupta's piece
(http://www.indianexpress.com/news/national-interest-the-caste-of-corruption/891508/0)
reads:

"The upper caste, creamy layer of our society is the most
prejudiced, and yet the most dominant minority in any democracy in the
world. That is why even the person representing Mayawati on otherwise
brilliant funny-man Cyrus Broacha's show on CNN-IBN always has a
blackened face (Dalits are supposed to be dark-skinned, no?) and that
is why the man described by breathless anchors of our blue (business)
channels as India's Warren Buffett, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, sends out
tweets like this: "Don't think [Kapil] Sibal even understands the
internet. This happens when you make a lawyer an IT Minister. Like
hiring Mayawati for an item song." Of course, Mayawati could return
the compliment by gifting him a very large mirror. But can you imagine
the real Warren Buffett getting away with saying something like this
about Michelle Obama?

Little wonder, Jhunjhunwala has hit back with a series of tweets (here
https://twitter.com/#!/jhunjhunwala/statuses/150522167266775040, here
https://twitter.com/#!/jhunjhunwala/statuses/150522167266775040, here
https://twitter.com/#!/jhunjhunwala/statuses/150522558092021760, here
https://twitter.com/#!/jhunjhunwala/statuses/150523625789861888).

For the record, Jhunjhunwala's Twitter's profile reads:

"I invented Twitter. I'm humble. I've attained omni God mode.
Aspire/ don't envy.

Disclaimer: I'm Fake Jhunjhunwala. The real parody writer of the
Secret Journal of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala"

The Express slip-up comes about a month after the gossip column of the
paper made the same mistake of thinking it was from the real
Jhunjhunwala.

Also, for the record, Fake Jhunjhunwala has a column under the byline
"Fake Jhunjhunwala" in the Hindustan Times in Bombay, and was recently
quoted as "Fake Jhunjhunwala" in an Outlook* magazine story on Kapil
Sibal's attempt to "pre-screen" internet content
