[ZESTCaste] My best friend Devdas Adidela no more

Dear friends,

With unbearably heavy heart I am writing this. Mr Devdas Adidela one of the best friends of mine passsed away today in Hyderabad. He was just 50.

I knew him since 1992 and we were like brothers though we share no blood relationship.  Ambedkar Scholarships started with his help. When I was looking for someone to help me and found none to come forward to shoulder responsibility, it was he who helped lay its foundations. He was one of the good-heated persons I knew in my entire life.

Though he left Ambedkar Scholarships due to trivial differences two years ago, we have remained to be good friends. When I was in India, I met him couple of times. When I called him on Dec 25 to wish him Merry Christmas, I felt he was happy as ever. I never imagined that the end is so near.

I am still unable to recover from the death of my younger brother whom I lost in May 2010. This news coupled with my brother's death is a big blow to my orale and feel as if I am also dead. It is too much my frail heart.

Why good people go so early? Unanswered question!

I have very few friends in my life; with Devdas I lost a good friend, a brother, and above all a good human.

With heavy heart,

Benamin Paul Kaila

[ZESTCaste] Dalit capitalism's celebration bash

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/parties/delhi/Dalit-capitalisms-celebration-bash/articleshow/7229411.cms

Dalit capitalism's celebration bash
Caroline D'Cruz, TNN, Jan 7, 2011, 12.00am IST

A party was organised to celebrate Dalit capitalism at the India
International Centre recently. As more than 20 Dalit entrepreneurs
came together in celebration of a few encouraging rags to riches
stories, they were in the company of single malts and imported vodka.

WHY DALIT? This seemed to be the question on a lot of people's minds
because while everyone can be an entrepreneur, were they looking for
distinction of some sort using the socially segregating word? Said
Chandrabhan Prasad, co-host of the party, "We are not looking for
distinction or sympathy of any sort. It is a gathering of these people
from various backgrounds who have worked hard to achieve what they
have." Prasad livened up the mood by screaming out "Mercedes kharido,
Manu bhagao" (Manu was a sage and the author of Manusmriti, the book
that talked about caste system) to the crowd while they raised their
hands to signify acquiring cars and helicopters in the near future.
Natharam, a Dalit entrepreneur declared that he owned a ship already,
much to the awe of the guests present.

EXPERT TALK: Planning commission deputy chairman Montek Singh
Ahluwalia urged Dalit entrepreneurs to "set up a dedicated venture
capital fund to finance business projects taken up by the socially
neglected community." "Humein dekhna hai ki inke numbers aur bhi badhe
(Dalit entrepreneurs). We will discuss as to what all steps we can
take for the success of Dalit businessmen," he added. On being quizzed
if so many upcoming groups would pose a problem, Ahluwalia replied,
"Koi harz nahi hai agar groups bane, hamara desh itna bada hai ki har
koi tarakki kar sakta hai. Sarkar ki aisi policy honi chahiye ki naya
competition market mein aaye," he said.

[ZESTCaste] He had instigated Khairlanji dalits

http://www.hindustantimes.com/He-had-instigated-Khairlanji-dalits/Article1-646505.aspx

He had instigated Khairlanji dalits
Pradip Kumar Maitra, Hindustan Times

Nagpur, January 05, 2011
First Published: 02:32 IST(5/1/2011)

Officials of the anti-naxalite squad have arrested Sudhir Dhawale, 42,
an alleged top aide of state naxalite chief, Milind Teltumbde, at
Wardha — around 635 km from Mumbai. According to the local police,
Dhawale, a resident of Byculla, was in Wardha to attend the Ambedkar
Yuva Sahitya Sammelan. He
was boarding a train to Mumbai when he was arrested on Sunday evening
based on information provided by the six naxalites, who had been
arrested by the Gondia police on December 26, 2010.

The police have registered a case against Dhawale under the Unlawful
Activities Prevention Act and sedition charge. He has been remanded in
police custody for nine days.

Teltumbde had also reportedly accompanied the six arrested naxalites
after attending a meeting in a hideout at Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh,
but he managed to give the slip to the police.

Ravindra Kadam, deputy inspector general of police, anti-naxalite
squad, said the police have concrete evidence about Dhawale being an
active member of the naxalite movement.

He had been recently elevated as a state committee member of the
Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Dhawale and Teltumbde had allegedly instigated dalits after the
Bhotmanage family's massacre in Khairlanji village three years ago,
resulting in violence across Maharashtra.

Dhawale's wife, Darshana, a matron with the railway hospital at
Byculla, alleged that he was falsely implicated by the police. "My
husband is a social worker and was never associated with naxalite
movement. The state police raided my Byculla house on Monday and a
search operation was on for more than six hours. The police seized 89
books of Karl Marx, Lenin and others. They were looking for naxalite
literature," she said.

"Is keeping and reading books of Karl Marx and Lenin was illegal?"

Lawyer Surendra Gadling, who is Darshana's brother, claimed Dhawale is
a freelance journalist and the editor of Marathi magazine, Vidrohi.
"The state police are terrorising innocent people. We are contesting
the case and will send a three-member team of lawyers to Gondia on
January 5 to meet Dhawale."

[ZESTCaste] Activists, journalists protest arrest of Dhawle

http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/other-states/article1033150.ece

Mumbai, January 5, 2011
Activists, journalists protest arrest of Dhawle
Vinaya Deshpande

Government trying to muzzle the voice of democratic protestors, says wife

A day after the arrest of the Mumbai-based Dalit activist and editor
of Vidrohi magazine, Sudhir Dhawle (42), by the Gondia police in
Wardha on charges of waging a war against the State, more than 150
human rights activists, social activists, writers and journalists
protested here on Tuesday against the detention.

Mr. Dhawle, also a freelance journalist, was arrested on charges of
having links with the banned Communist Party of India
(Marxist-Leninist). He has been booked under Section 121-A of the
Indian Penal Code, read with sub-sections 17, 20 and 39, and under the
Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He was remanded to police
custody till January 12.

"He is a well-known human rights activist here who has been working
with the poor for more than 25 years. He is being victimised by the
government for not agreeing with it. Nothing he did was secret. He was
an easy target for the police because he worked at the grass roots,"
Anand Patwardhan, documentary-film maker and human rights activist,
told The Hindu.

Mr. Patwardhan criticised the sedition law as anti-constitutional and
fascist in nature. "It [the law] is fascist and a leftover of the
British rule. It goes against the fundamental rights."Mr. Dhawle's
wife Darshana Dhawle, a nurse by profession, said, "Sudhir has always
protested in a democratic and just manner. He has been active in the
social movements since his college days, but it is not at all true
that he believes in arms struggle. Though the police claim that, he
has always protested in a democratically acceptable manner," she told
The Hindu.

"His arrest proves that the government is muzzling the voices of all
those activists who are sincerely and democratically fighting for the
social cause. The government does not want to see people fearlessly
protesting on the streets against its wrongdoings, so it wants to
crush them. Why isn't a similar treatment meted out to the
perpetrators of the Khairlanji killings? How can they roam freely on
the streets today, whereas honest and straightforward activists are
being charged with serious offences?" she said.

Mr. Dhawle is one of the convenors of the Republican Panthers
Jaatiantachi Chalval (an association for the annihilation of castes).
He has authored few books and penned down articles in some of the
prominent regional dailies.

The police raided his house at Byculla here on Monday and seized some
material. "They have seized our computer's CPU and many documents and
books," Ms. Dhawle said.

"They seized books on Mao, Lenin, Marx and said that this literature
is the inspiration behind the Naxal movement. They also seized books
written by Sudhir. If all this openly available literature is the
inspiration behind the Naxal movement, what is the inspiration behind
the farmers' suicides, the Ramabai Ambedkar nagar firing? The
government's stand is clearly anti-people."

The Dhawles have a 10-year old daughter, Pruthvi, and 16-year-old son Kshitij.

"Pruthvi keeps asking me why the police have caught him [Dhawle] if he
has not done anything wrong. They both are scared and wonder when the
police will leave their father," she said.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit entrepreneurs make a case for themselves

http://www.tehelka.com/story_main48.asp?filename=Ws040111CORPORATE.asp

Dalit entrepreneurs make a case for themselves

Self-made businessmen want less discrimination, greater opportunity

BY Anurag Srivastava
Delhi

Swapnil Bhingardevay runs an industrial unit and produces ethanol
which feeds into production of fuel. Currently, he has purchase orders
from all the three major oil marketing companies – Hindustan Petroleum
Corporation Ltd, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Indian Oil
Corporation Ltd – and needs working capital to get going. He can meet
the orders but for one hitch: A major bank, which he refuses to
identify, has not yet disbursed the loan for the capital despite all
the paperwork having been complete. He has a bigger reason why he has
not been given the loan – he is a Dalit.

"Even when you are a (Rs) 90 crore annual turnover industrialist, you
face the brunt of regional politics," he says. The first-generation
Dalit multimillionaire from Satara, Maharashtra, is shoulders above a
common man but at his level, he can be yet be checked from growing too
big. His might be a special case.

"It is true that having made our millions, we do not face problems
that ordinary people do," says Milind Kamble, chairman of the Dalit
Indian Chamber of Commerce (DICCI), "but there are greater limits to
entry for the Dalits in general and different types of problems at
higher levels which are caste specific."

Both were part of a DICCI delegation that on Monday met Montek Singh
Ahluwalia, the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, to bring up
issues facing Dalit entrepreneurs.

The purpose of the chamber is to establish communication lines with
the government and to turn as many Dalits as possible into
entrepreneurs, besides safeguarding members' interests.

It wants government provision of larger chunks of finance to Dalit
entrepreneurs, starting with modifying funding schemes such as the one
from the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation,
which provides loans subject to an upper limit of Rs 5 lakh.

The key demands that the chamber made to the government was to include
Dalit entrepreneurs in priority-sector lending at special rates
through institutions such as the Small Industries Development Bank of
India and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The fact that there is a vibrant Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce
comprising first-generation, self-made Dalit industrialists, and the
fact that they want better opportunities for their kind, is a welcome
development, and gives a different meaning to affirmative action. It
marks progress in the sense that India Inc is not the sole preserve of
those born rich – or as upper castes.
