Bhanwari Case: Divers Recover Wristwatch, Bones
PTI | Jodhpur (Raj) | Jan 07, 2012

In a crucial development in Bhanwari Devi missing case, a wrist watch, some pieces of bones and few other articles were today recovered from Rajiv Gandhi lift canal near Jaloda village where her remains were allegedly dumped.

"A wrist watch, some pieces of bones and a few articles, including a ring and a locket, were recovered from the canal. It is subject to verification whether the articles were of Bhanwari Devi," a police official said.

The recovery was made by a joint team of police and CBI. The Rajasthan government has stopped water supply to the canal to enable the investigators to locate the remains of Bhanwari.

Kailash Jakhar, an accused in the case, had told CBI that he and his accomplice Bishnaram Bishnoi were handed over Bhanwari's body on September 1, 2011 after which they burnt it in a crater near Jaloda and threw the remains in the canal.

CBI officials said they will bring Bishnaram at the spot in Jaloda village, about 150 km from Jodhpur, for verification of these articles.

The divers had yesterday recovered a wooden bat, a poly bag containing two country made revolvers, a few bangles and bone pieces from the canal.

A team of Central Forensic Science Laboratory had yesterday sent the ashes collected from the site, where the body was allegedly burnt, to New Delhi for a DNA test to ascertain if they were the remains of Bhanwari, while a CBI court extended the custody of sacked Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna, arrested for his alleged role in her disappearance.

Bhanwari had gone missing on September 1, 2011 after a CD allegedly showing her in a compromising position with Maderna was circulated in the political circle.

[ZESTCaste] Probe ordered into honour killing

Karnataka | Posted on Jan 07, 2012 at 12:28pm IST
Probe ordered into honour killing
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

MANDTA: An alleged honour killing of a girl who fell in love with a
Dalit boy has come to light two months after her death, with the
police starting an investigation into the incident.

The girl was allegedly killed by her parents and a few others in the
village. The incident came to light case as Thimmappa, brother of the
Dalit boy, Govindaraju, accompanied by Dalit Sangarsha Samithi (DSS)
activists, lodged a police complaint.

Suvarna, a final BA student of A D Beligowda College in Koppa and
daughter of Davalan Ramakrishna, fell in love with Govindaraju, who
was working in a jaggery unit in the village. When the girls' family
members learnt about their affair, they made Suvarana discontinue her
studies and warned Govindaraju and his family members to stay away
from her.

The girls' family took steps to marry her off to a boy from their community.

Meanwhile, Suvarna decided to elope with Govindaraju. However, her
family members and villagers rounded off Suvarna, and attacked
Govindarju and his parents. The girls' parents belong to Vokkaliga
community and are allegedly close to influential leaders.

Infuriated with this incident, Suvrana's family members disowned her.
They then allegedly took her to Govindaraju's house and hanged her to
death two months back.

Though, some in the group wanted to lodge a compliant accusing
Govindaraju's family of killing Suvrana, they later decided to hush up
the case and performed her last rites late in the evening.

The Dalit families, fearing attack by the upper caste, kept silent
over the issue.

Thimmaiah came into contact with few a DSS activists and decided to
lodge a complaint with the Koppa police. The police have registered a
murder case against Davalan Ramakrishna and a few others.

Mandya SP Kawshalendra Kumar visited Aabalawadi and deployed police
there to ensure peace and protection to the Dalits. Malvalli DSP
Uthappa had been asked to investigate the case.

He said many evidences might not be available as the compliant had
been filed after two months. The police have asked Thimappa to tell
Govindaraju to appear before the police. But, Govinadarju who fled the
village after he was attacked, had not turned up, he said.

When asked why the police did not take action initially, he said they
could not proceed as there was no complaint lodged.

DSS state convenor Guruprasad Karegodu demanded the suspension of the
Koppa Police SI for failing to suo motu investigate the case.

[ZESTCaste] Athawale raises pitch on demand for Indu Mills land

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Mumbai/Athawale-raises-pitch-on-demand-for-Indu-Mills-land/Article1-792583.aspx

Athawale raises pitch on demand for Indu Mills land
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
Mumbai, January 07, 2012

On Friday, a day after he finalising a seat-sharing deal with the Shiv
Sena-BJP alliance for the Mumbai civic polls, Republican Party of
India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale upped the ante over the issue of
building a memorial for Dr B R Ambedkar at Indu mills in Dadar. In a
bid to score
over the state Congress, which quickly got the Centre to approve the
demand to hand over the entire 12.5 acres of land at Indu mills for
the memorial, Athawale threatened that he would start an agitation if
the land was not handed over by the Centre by January 26.

Athawale, who was an ally of the Congress-NCP for about two decades,
is now using the Indu mills card to score over his former partners, as
he has joined hands with the saffron combine.

Athawale hopes that the issue will help him connect with the dalit
voters, who are reported to be in a dilemma after he joined hands
with the saffron alliance in November 2011. Traditionally, the dalit
voters do not support right-wing parties. Hence Athawale needs an
emotional issue to woo his support base.

In a gathering of RPI followers at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar ground at
Worli on Friday evening, Athawale asked the Congress at the Centre, to
officially hand over the land for the memorial on or before January
26. Else, the RPI will gherao Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
protest on the streets, he announced. "The Congress party has made
several false promises to us on several occasions. We want them to
come clean on what they have promised," Athawale said. The
constitution, framed by Dr Ambedkar, came into effect on January 26,
so the mill land should be officially handed over on the same day, he
demanded.

The Indu mills land has been at the centre of a controversy as various
Dalit outfits opposed the Centre's decision to hand over only four
acres of the mill's land for the memorial, asking for the entire 12.5
acres instead.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit parties lock horns over memorial for Ambedkar

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Dalit-parties-lock-horns-over-memorial-for-Ambedkar/articleshow/11394803.cms

Dalit parties lock horns over memorial for Ambedkar
Ambarish Mishra, TNN | Jan 7, 2012, 02.50AM IST

MUMBAI: RPI-A chief's Ramdas Athavale's woes are far from over. He may
have extracted a few more seats from the saffron alliance. However,
the maverick RPI leader has Anandraj Ambedkar breathing down his neck
over the Dr B R Ambedkar memorial in central Mumbai. The Ambedkar
monument that has become a major poll issue raises a host of questions
about the Dalit diaspora.

Noted Dalit poet Namdeo Dhasal fired a salvo against Athavale. Dhasal,
who has excellent equations with the Sena, is reportedly upset with
Matoshree for promoting Athavale. Dhasal and Athavale had a tiff on
Thursday at Sena Bhavan where the Sena-BJP-RPI leaders met to discuss
seat-sharing. As Dhasal was wheeled into Sena CEO Uddhav Thackeray's
office, several of Athavale's supporters stopped Dhasal's loyalists at
the doorstep. This sparked a row and a fuming Dhasal walked out of the
meeting. Later, Athavale tendered his apology to Dhasal. However, the
poet is in no mood for a truce. It all began with Athavale sealing a
poll pact with the Sena-BJP combine. The alliance has created fissures
in the state's multi-layered Dalit movement. Many Dalit activists are
opposed to Athavale's breaking bread with the Hindutva brigade.

It is in this context that the recent Dalit crusade, led by Anandraj,
to set up an Ambedkar memorial on a 12-acre plot of the India United
Mills , assumes political significance.

Anandraj is the late Dr B R Ambedkar's grandson. Anandraj took charge
of the stir and forcibly occupied the now-defunct India United Mills
to press his demand that the Maharashtra government should acquire the
mill plot from the National Textiles Corporation and clear the decks
to set up the memorial.

[ZESTCaste] ‘Honour killing’ claims woman’s life in Mandya

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hubli/Honour-killing-claims-womans-life-in-Mandya/articleshow/11394364.cms

'Honour killing' claims woman's life in Mandya
TNN | Jan 7, 2012, 01.57AM IST

MANDYA: The murder of a woman belonging to an upper caste, that had
taken place here on December 6, has turned out to be a case of "honour
killing". The crime is said to have been committed by victim Suvarna's
father with the help his relatives who opposed her affair with a Dalit
man in Abalavadi village of Maddur taluk.

A complaint was filed on January 6, though the murder had taken place
a month ago. According to police, Suvarna's father Ramakrishna and
cousins Ramanna, Timmesh Lallegowda, Mallesh and others hanged at her
lover Govindaraju's house on December 6. Also, they allegedly burnt
the body the same night.

It is said Suvarna and Govindaraju were in love, much to the
opposition of the former's family. In his complaint, Govindaraju's
brother Timmappa stated that on December 6, the accused beat the
lovers black and blue. He charged the accused with dragging Suvarna to
his house to hang her. While she was being beaten up, the brothers
fled the village and reached Koppa police station.

In the complaint, Timmappa said that despite their verbal complaint,
some policemen advised him to hide until they were asked to come out.
However, following threats to his life by the accused, Timmappa
decided to lodge a written complaint. He said he was worried about the
safety of his mother and wife.

"We had been living in fear, as they taken away our belongings.
Besides threatening us brothers, the accused also insisted other
villages not to explain to police what had happened on December 6,"
Timmappa said. Dy Sp Uttappa said they are on the look out for the
accused. The police are also looking for Govindaraju to take his
statement. SP Koushalendrakumar said the case, registered under
various sections of IPC and SC/ ST acts, has been entrusted to
Malavalli DySP for investigation. "I shall study the complaint to find
out whether police officers had shown dereliction of their duty even
after receiving verbal complaint," he said.

[ZESTCaste] Sibal ridicules Maya for being 'ignorant' of scams

http://zeenews.india.com/news/uttar-pradesh/sibal-ridicules-maya-for-being-ignorant-of-scams_750806.html

Sibal ridicules Maya for being 'ignorant' of scams
Last Updated: Friday, January 06, 2012, 18:08

Lucknow: Union minister Kapil Sibal on Friday ridiculed Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mayawati for "remaining ignorant" of corruption by her
ministers for full five years and coming to know about it only at
election time.

"It is surprising that when the entire country was aware of corruption
in her government, she remained ignorant during her full five-year
term and today when elections have been announced she has come to know
of it," he told reporters here.

The HRD Minister said the rate at which he has removed 12 ministers,
by the time elections are held all the remaining ones might also be
sacked on corruption charges and Mayawati might find herself alone in
the ministry.

Sibal was here on way to Gorakhpur to participate in a programme but
could not proceed due to bad weather.

Terming the BSP government as the most tainted, he said corruption has
been made an election issue by the people who had been at the
receiving end during the past 20 years by every political permutation
and combination in Uttar Pradesh.

The state has got one corrupt government after the other in these 20
years, he said adding people of the state are tired of these parties
and have made up their minds to repose faith in the Congress.

Attacking the Chief Minister, Sibal alleged that one-third of the
state's budget has been spent by her on statues while Rs 12 crore has
been spent on her own residence.

Though funds were required in drought-prone Bundelkhand region, the
money was spent on her statues, he alleged.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati's statues to be covered? EC to decide

Mayawati's statues to be covered? EC to decide
Agencies
Lucknow, January 07, 2012

Ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Election
Commission is likely to take a decision on Saturday on whether to
cover up statues of chief minister Mayawati and that of the Bahujan
samaj Party's poll symbol, the elephant.

According to a CNN-IBN report, the EC
may take a decision on this at its meeting on Saturday evening as many
political parties, including the BJP, have complained that the statues
give the BSP an unfair advantage.

The BJP had demanded that the Election Commission should order removal
of statues of elephants - the poll symbol of BSP - installed in the
state.

"Though government hoardings and advertisements were removed after
model code of conduct came into effect, the statues of elephants have
not been removed," BJP national spokesman Ramnath Kovid had said in
Lucknow on last Saturday.

[ZESTCaste] SP, BSP flayed for promising cheap liquor, arms licences

SP, BSP flayed for promising cheap liquor, arms licences
TNN | Jan 7, 2012, 03.43AM IST

LUCKNOW: Politicians in Uttar Pradesh are now openly promising cheap
liquor and free-for-all firearm licences if voted to power in the
assembly election.

After Samajwadi Party (SP) state president Akhilesh Yadav sought
public support at a public meeting in Bhimnagar pointing out that the
prices of alcohol have gone up in the Mayawati regime, Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) leader and social welfare minister in Mayawati's
government Indrajeet Saroj, at a public meeting in Kaushambi, assured
people that firearms licences will be distributed in large numbers in
the area if BSP continues in power after the election.

Yadav, who has opposed the entry of west Uttar Pradesh mafia don D P
Yadav in SP, landed in a controversy on Thursday when he said that not
only the prices of petrol and diesel have gone up, people are not
evening getting their daily dose of 'evening medicine' (liquor) as
prices have shot up.

He said that people who consume alcohol are the real campaigners of
the party. He said those who consume 'sham ki dawa' are with the SP
and thus, they are the party's real campaigners. Saroj, on the other
hand, promised voters firearm licences in exchange for support to the
BSP.

He said that people need firearm licence for self protection. Saroj
was apparently trying to appease the people in the area where firearms
are a status symbol. Most people in the upper castes have firearms.
Lower castes now also aspire to match upper castes. While the Congress
party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have lashed out at the BSP
and SP for stooping low for electoral gains, the Election Commission
has reports from district administrations of Kaushambi and Moradabad
on the above issues.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders said that this shows how desperate the
SP and BSP are to grab power. Congress leaders, on the other hand,
said that the promises made by the SP and BSP leaders are unethical
and open violation of model code of conduct.

[ZESTCaste] And now Amar Singh sings Maya tune

http://news24online.com/And-now-Amar-Singh-sings-Maya-tune_News24_38656.aspx

And now Amar Singh sings Maya tune

News 24 Desk
New Delhi: Ailing but alert Amar Singh predicates Mayawati retaining
her control over power in UP post forthcoming assembly elections, even
though as he himself says, " I wish Congress form the government in
UP." In an interview with Ms. Anurradha Prasad for her weekly show
'Aamne-Samne',the former strongman of Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh says
that despite all out effort to grab the power in the last elections,
Samajwadi Party able to muster barely 142 seats. " That was the time
when SP had leaders from all castes and communities and also getting
support from stars like Sanjay Dutt. The situation has changed since
then," he felt. 'Will your Lok Manch support BSP in Uttar Pradesh ?'
"Of course, I support Mayawati as she has supported our cause in
taking the lead in carving out Purvanchal from Uttar Pradesh", Amar
Singh said, adding , " Even she took the lead in this regard purely on
political reasons, she did what we really wanted for the overall
development of backward Purvanchal region." Replying to another
question, Amar Singh said even though Mayawati has not given him time
for a meeting, he still feels that BSP has an edge over SP as there is
no charge against her (Mayawati) other than corruption. " This is not
possible for Congress to pin her down on this ground after it is also
under soup due to series of scams like 2G and CWG. 'Surveys predicting
photo-finish between SP and BSP in UP ?' Citing the results of
previous election surveys, Amar Singh said that in the last assembly
elections of Tamil Nadu, surveys predicated close fight between DMK
and AIADMK. However, those who did the survey eat the dust. 'Who would
be the Chief Minister of UP if Samajwadi Party gets the majority?' " I
believe that Mulayam Singh would give way to Akhilesh Yadav to become
the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. I feel there is nothing wrong if
he does that after all Congress too wants to anoint Rahul Gandhi as
the leader of the party. Sharad Pawar also feels the same way for her
daughter,Supriya Sule," Amar Singh told us. 'Will he rejoin Samajwadi
Party ?' " I can beg on the street, but it is unthinkable for me to
join SP once again," he made it clear. 'Did you ever thought that one
day you would have to stay behind Tihar Jail?' And taking a gentle dig
on the court order, Amar Singh said, " While all the accused in the
cash for vote case were granted the bail on a cash surety of Rs 1.50
lakh to Rs 2 lakh, I got the bail after surety of whopping Rs.1.50
crore. And it is true that I worked overtime along with Delhi Chief
Minister Sheela Dikshit to get the support of MPs from North-Eastern
states in order to save the government." You can catch up Amar Singh
in Aamne-samne at 8.30 pm on Saturday (December 7) and Sunday
(December 8) on News24.
