Ambedkar museum: A tribute to the legend

Located on Senapati Bapat road, Ambedkar museum was set up in the
memory of the legendry freedom fighter and writer of constitution of
free India, Babasaheb Ambedkar. The museum showcases the different
stages of his life right from his birth to death.

Inaugurated in 1996, the belongings of Babasaheb Ambedkar were donated
to the museum by his wife. The wide collection of items used by the
legend is well displayed and lets you peep in his life. A philosopher,
economist, anthropologist and Buddhist activist, Babasaheb played a
key role during the independence struggle.

Ambedkar museum is a popular spot among archaeologist, tourists and
researchers. Done in a huge dome style and painted in white and light
shade of blue, one can't miss this historical monument that pops out
on the busy street. Surrounded by thick greenery, the dome appears
very pleasant to the eye.

The museum is maintained by Symbiosis institute. Enriched with
numerous articles the museum narrates the life of the legend. Among
the various items displayed at the museum include his walk clock,
paper weight carved with his name, violin, night lamp, dining table
and chairs, travel accessories, footwear, gardening tools, cap and
clothes. Other articles also include utensils, pens, books and his
bed. The silver ink bottle presented to him by the then governor
general of India Lord Mount Batten is also preserved at the museum.
The museum also depicts the way Babasaheb was laid on the bed when he
breathed his last. The Bharat Ratna awarded to him by President
Venkatraman is also displayed at the museum. It also displays few
letters addressed to and written by him. Old photographs of Babasaheb
Ambedkar at important events are also exhibited.

The museum is a humble way of paying tribute to the legend. It is open
from 8 am to 5:30 pm. There is a nominal entry fee and camera is
strictly prohibited. Photographs and booklets are up for sale at the
counter.

[ZESTCaste] Vachati dalit rape victims get justice 19 years later

INDIA
Vachati dalit rape victims get justice 19 years later

Posted on :16:57:55 Sep 29, 2011

DHARMAPURI: A special court on Thursday gave verdict in the 1992
Vachti case and convicted all 269 accused for atrocity on Dalits and
17 of them for rape. However, 54 of the accused are already dead. 18
women were allegedly raped and nearly 100 villagers brutally beaten in
the incident. Four Indian Forest Service officers have been convicted
under the SC, ST Act for atrocity against tribals.

In June 1992, a team comprising 155 forest personnel, 108 policemen
and six revenue officials entered Vachathi in Krishnagiri district of
Tamil Nadu in search of smuggled sandalwood. In the guise of inquiry,
the villagers, mainly women, were dragged out of their homes and
fields, assembled under a banyan tree where they were allegedly beaten
up mercilessly before being taken to the Forest Ranger's Office in
Harur, Tamil Nadu where they were subjected to savage brutality.

The court was scheduled to deliver the judgement on September 26.
However, it was put off for Thursday as three of the accused were not
present on that day. Punishment is to be announced separately.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit woman given witch tag, beaten up

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Dalit-woman-given-witch-tag-beaten-up/Article1-753594.aspx

Rajasthan
Dalit woman given witch tag, beaten up
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
Bhilwara, October 04, 2011

In a repeat instance of atrocity on scheduled castes, a Dalit woman
was described as a witch, beaten and paraded half-naked in a village
in Bhilwara district last week, the police said on Monday.

Rani (name changed) of Phulia Khurd village, about 70 km from
Bhilwara, said in her
FIR filed on Sunday that four villagers entered her house on September
27, dubbed her a witch and beat her up.

In Bhilwara in the past six months this is the third incident where a
Dalit woman has been beaten up and branded a witch.

"The villagers – Gheesu Jat, Chothu Mali, Balu Mali and Godu Mali –
insulted and tortured me. They wanted me to leave the village," she
told media persons in hospital.

She has injuries on her head and hands.

"A couple of days ago they harassed me on the road and threatened me
to leave the village. I am scared. How can I live in such a place
where people are after my life?" she asked.

Acting station house officer Shahpura Fatah Lal said the victim's son
had filed an FIR, naming the four accused.

The son said his mother was cooking when the accused broke the door
and started beating her. "They assaulted her and tore her clothes.
Then they paraded her half naked in the village."

[ZESTCaste] PM directs facelift of Ambedkar memorial in Delhi

PM directs facelift of Ambedkar memorial in Delhi
Last Updated: Tuesday, October 04, 2011, 19:39

New Delhi: The B R Ambedkar memorial, located in a north Delhi area
where the Dalit icon breathed his last, will get a facelift, with
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday issuing directions for
urgently developing it in a manner that befits the late leader.

Singh reviewed the condition of the memorial, situated in a bungalow
on Alipore Road, during a meeting which was attended by Minister of
Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik, sources said.

It was noted that the memorial on a three-acre land comprises a
photo-gallery and a library.

After the review, the Prime Minister directed Wasnik to take urgent
steps to constitute a high-level committee for the development of the
memorial, they said.

Singh said he strongly supports the idea that the monument devoted to
the memory of Ambedkar should be developed in a manner befitting the
great leader, the sources said.

The timing of the decision is significant as Uttar Pradesh is going to
assembly polls in a few months and Congress would be expecting to
boost its prospects by wooing Dalit votes.

The Prime Minister earlier met a delegation consisting of
representatives of the memorial and assured them that due
consideration would be given to development of the monument.

[ZESTCaste] Eye on UP polls, PM’s nod for Ambedkar Memorial upgrade

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Eye-on-UP-polls-PMs-nod-for-Ambedkar-Memorial-upgrade/articleshow/10238881.cms

Eye on UP polls, PM's nod for Ambedkar Memorial upgrade
TNN | Oct 5, 2011, 05.00AM IST

NEW DELHI: With the Uttar Pradesh election fast approaching, Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh has approved an upgrade of the B R Ambedkar
Memorial here and supported a proposal for a monument devoted to the
memory of the famous Dalit leader.

The Ambedkar Memorial is currently housed in a bungalow on a
three-acre plot at 26, Alipore Road, where the leader passed away, and
after a review the PM asked minister for social justice and
empowerment Mukul Wasnik to set up a committee to develop the
memorial.

The memorial comprises just a photo gallery and a library and if it is
made more comprehensive it is likely to attract many visitors as the
interest in Ambedkar's life remains high, particularly among scholars,
activists, Dalits and Buddhists.

The monument will be developed in a manner "befitting the memory of
the great leader", an official statement said. The impetus for
approving the proposals seems to be next year's UP polls where
Congress hopes to emerge as the main challenger to Dalit supremo
Mayawati.

With Congress led by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi hoping to
dent the UP chief minister's pro-poor credentials and wean away at
least a slice of her Dalit support, the Ambedkar Memorial gives the
party a few talking points.
