BHU remembers its student Babu Jagjivan Ram
TNN | Jul 6, 2011, 08.22pm IST

VARANASI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) paid rich tributes to its
illustrious alumnus Babu Jagjivan Ram at a function held at the arts
department on the occasion of his 25th death anniversary on Wednesday.

Rajesh Singh, chairman of press, publication and publicity cell of
BHU, said, "It is a matter of great pride that one of the noblest sons
of India was a student of BHU under the patronage of our illustrious
founder Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya."

In Jagjivan Ram's honour, the BHU has established Babu Jagjivan Ram
chair to perpetuate the memory of the great freedom fighter and
visionary leader.

In 1925, Malviya had visited Arrah where Jagjivan Ram, being the best
student in the school, was asked to read out the welcome address.
Deeply impressed by the erudition of young Jagjivan Ram, Malviya
invited him to study at the BHU. At the same time, the Christian
Mission at Chandwa had also offered to bear the expense of his
education and urged his mother to send Jagjivan to Lucknow and then to
America for higher studies. But his mother felt that changing religion
was not the answer to the oppressive caste system and advised Jagjivan
to join BHU.

After passing the inter science examination from BHU, Jagjivan Ram
took admission in BSc at Calcutta University and passed it with a
distinction.

Within six months of coming to Calcutta (now Kolkata), he organised a
'mazdoor rally' at Wellington Square, said Singh, adding that the
grand success of this rally brought Jagjivan Ram into the limelight
and leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose took notice of him. During this
period, he also got acquainted with Chandrashekhar Azad, Manmath Nath
Gupt and other leading revolutionaries.

Since childhood, Jagjivan Ram had dreamed of becoming a scientist. But
as he grew up, he could no longer ignore the socio-political
situations enveloping the country and he sacrificed his personal
ambitions to answer the call of his motherland. In 1934 when
earthquake struck Bihar, Jagjivan Ram rushed to north Bihar for relief
work. During his work in the relief camps, he met Mahatma Gandhi for
the first time.

In addition, the social sciences department at the Banaras Hindu
University (BHU) has established Babu Jagjivan Ram chair in his
memory. It is an inter-disciplinary centre with a special focus on
contributions of Jagjivan Ram.

According to the university spokesperson, the main features and
objectives of the chair are to throw light on his contributions
towards marginalised sections of the society, Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes and his efforts for their upliftment and
rehabilitation. It aims at empowerment of SC/ST women through
socio-economic schemes and their evaluation, and dalit women
empowerment.

The centre also intends to highlight Jagjivan Ram's futuristic vision
of democratic polity and society, and his contributions in national
movements and nation building and as minister holding different
portfolios.

Besides, the centre would undertake a comprehensive study of the
historical development of dalit movement in India with a special
reference to the pre-and-post independent India.

The BHU has also proposed to establish a centre in his name - Babu
Jagjivan Ram Centre for Rural and Tribal Development on the Rajeev
Gandhi South Campus of BHU at Barkachha, Mirzapur.

[ZESTCaste] Congress too wants Dadar station renamed

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Congress-too-wants-Dadar-station-renamed/Article1-718273.aspx

Congress too wants Dadar station renamed
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
Mumbai, July 07, 2011

In a bid to woo Dalit voters before the civic polls next year,
political parties are shouting over each other with their demands to
rename key landmarks of the city. A month ago, the Nationalist
Congress Party (NCP) demanded that Dadar railway station be renamed as
Chaityabhoomi, after
the memorial of Babasaheb Ambedkar by the same name. Not to be
outdone, the Congress party now has demanded that the station be
renamed after the Dalit leader himself.

On Wednesday, city Congress president Kripashankar Singh said it would
be fitting tribute to the Dalit icon if Dadar station were to be named
after him. "Chaityabhoomi, the memorial as well as the Raj Gruha, the
residence of Babasaheb Ambedkar are in Dadar," said Singh.

He said that he had written to both, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
Mukul Roy, minister of state for railways with his demand.

On Monday, RPI leader Ramdas Athavale demanded that Mumbai Central
station should be renamed after Ambedkar. This is likely to conflict
with the ambitions of the Shiv Sena, who wants to rename the station
after philanthropist Jagannath Shankarsheth, who played a significant
role in development of Mumbai during the British era.

On Wednesday, however, the Sena once again hopped on to the renaming
bandwagon. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said, "Both, Maratha
king Shivaji Maharaj and Babasaheb Ambedkar are iconic personalities.
So, after Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Churchgate, which is a major
railway station, should be renamed after Ambedkar. This would be the
real Shiv Shakti-Bhim Shakti alliance."

"In the event that Churchgate cannot be rechristened, the Bandra-Worli
Sea Link should be named after Dr Ambedkar," Raut added. He also said
that the Sena is firm on its earlier demand that Mumbai Central should
be named after Shankarsheth.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has condemned parties making such
demands. "These are frivolous issues and will only increase tensions
in society," said MNS legislator Nitin Sardesai. "Political parties
should adopt constructive programmes instead of indulging in such
unwanted campaigns," he added.

[ZESTCaste] BSP strategy: keep Dalits away, launch ad blitzkrieg

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/bsp-strategy-keep-dalits-away-launch-ad-blitzkrieg/813969/

BSP strategy: keep Dalits away, launch ad blitzkrieg
Sanjay Singh Posted online: Thu Jul 07 2011, 03:39 hrs
Lucknow : Faced with Rahul Gandhi's unconventional padyatra politics,
the BSP has decided on a two-pronged approach.

Politically, the ruling party has started working on a plan to prevent
erosion of its core base of Dalit vote. On the administrative front,
the government will not interfere with the padyatra, unless it becomes
a law and order problem, in order to avoid giving the Congress an
advantage and sympathy of the masses.

Rahul's padyatra is preparatory to the Congress's Kisan Mahapanchayat,
which is scheduled for July 9 at Aligarh's Numaish Ground. Since he is
not accompanied by party leaders, flag-waving workers, and is not
holding any demonstration or protest, the government believes invoking
the charge of violation of prohibitory order would not be the right
thing.

The local administration has, therefore, been told to keep a watch on
the padyatra and take action as warranted by the circumstances.

The part of western UP through which Rahul is travelling is dominated
by land-owning Jats, who have been worst hit by land acquisition for
various projects. The BSP does not have much following in the
community. Therefore, Mayawati is not much worried about them. The
BSP's concern is the possible influence of the padyatra on Dalits.
Although traditionally, Jats and Dalits have had uneasy social
relations but, like others, the Dalits too have been hit by land
acquisition.

A BSP leader said they are planning to stop participation of their
core voters in the Kisan Mahapanchayat. A meeting of the Aligarh
district functionaries of the party has been called on July 8 in the
city for this purpose. Right from the polling booth level to assembly
constituency level, all party functionaries will be activated to
persuade Dalits against attending the mahapanchayat.

"The party's social engineering theory, which enables the BSP to bag
other castes' votes, works only when the BSP gets full support of
Dalit voters. Therefore, it is necessary to stop any tilt of the Dalit
voters towards the Congress," explained the leader.

The government is also planning to put up an advertise on July 9 — the
day of the mahapanchayat — on newspapers, to highlight the decisions
it has taken for the benefit of the farmers, like the new resettlement
and rehabilitation policy. "The advertisements will highlight the
failure of the Congress in improving the farmers' conditions despite
remaining in power for about four decades in the state," an official
said.

After the padyatra, the BSP will undertake an exercise to assess the
impact of the padyatra.

Rahul's concern an eyewash: BSP

LUCKNOW: In apparent retaliation of the padyatra by Rahul Gandhi, the
BSP on Wednesday told the Congress general secretary that if he was so
concerned for the farmers then he should exert pressure on the UPA
government for roll back of the recent hike in prices of diesel and
fertilizers.

A BSP spokesman, dubbing Rahul's concern for the farmers a hoax,
alleged that the Congress leader is indulging in antics with an eye on
UP Assembly elections in 2012. "Instead of staging political drama in
UP among the farmers, Rahul should exert pressure on the Congress-led
UPA government for reduction in the prices of diesel and fertilisers,"
the spokesman added. The BSP spokesman charged that Congress leader is
indulging in political drama only to divert the attention of the
people from the UPA government which is facing all round flak for a
series of scams and the recent hike in prices of petroleum
products.ENS

[ZESTCaste] The Death of Merit: Manish Kumar (IIT Roorkee) [A New Documentary]

The Death of Merit: Manish Kumar (IIT Roorkee) [A Documentary]

Manish Kumar Guddolian, 20 years of age, was pursuing his IInd year, Integrated Dual Degree Programme, Department of Computer Science & Information Technology, at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

The only son of a Junior Warrant Officer at Indian Air Force, Manish committed 'suicide' by jumping off from 5th floor of his hostel on 6th February, 2011.

The documentary is based on the testimonies of Manish's parents and other family members who have yet to come in terms with his death and are fighting against the collective might of IIT Roorkee and Roorkee Police that, as usual, want to relegate their child's death to 'a weak student getting depressed for not able to cope up with rigorous academic environment of highly competitive IITs' .

However the truth is Manish committed suicide, unable to bear the constant castetist assaults and abuses by his own batch-mates, criminal attitude of his hostel warden and IIT Administration that instead of acting on his complaints forced him to live outside IIT Roorkee, and perhaps also due to the complete shattering of his faith on IIT Administration that was supposed to treat all its students as equals and without using caste-lenses.
