BJP will stress on dalit agenda in UP
January 13th, 2011
Amita Verma

The Bhartiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh will now hit the Mayawati
government where it hurts the most, at her dalit vote base.
The BJP, according to sources, is all set to recall its dalit agenda
and work at expanding its base among dalits.
The party will focus on the reserved constituencies in the state.

o begin with, the party high command has asked its state leaders to
celebrate the birth anniversaries of dalit icons with fanfare and
increase their interaction with dalits at all levels.
"Whether it is Valmiki Jayanti or Kabir Jayanti or Ravidas Jayanti or
Ambedkar Jayanti, the party will hold functions to commemorate the
events and these will be held at the state as well as district level.
The idea is to dispel the myth that the BJP is a party for upper caste
Hindus. This is a party for all those who believe in Hindutva and
dalits are members of the Hindu family. This point we want to drive
home," said a senior BJP leader.
The party is also planning to organise a series of "samrasta bhoj"
(community feast) in villages in 2011 to increase the level of harmony
between party cadres and dalits.
The BJP has organised similar feasts on earlier occasions. This time,
the feasts are likely to begin from February and will continue through
the year.
"Senior leaders of the party will attend these feasts where they will
also get a chance to hold discussions with dalits in the rural
interiors and understand their problems, at the social, political and
economic levels," the party leader said.
Besides, the BJP is also preparing to claim credit for restoring dalit
pilgrim sites across the country.
"Ms Mayawati has built some memorials for dalit icons and is shouting
about her work from rooftops. The BJP, on the other hand, has quietly
restored the dalit pilgrim sites in various places in the country but
no one is talking about it. Now we will also publicise our work in a
big way. Dr Ambedkar's birthplace in Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, the place
in Nagpur where he embraced Buddhism, his residence on Alipur road in
Delhi and Chowpatty in Mumbai where he was cremated — all four places
were restored by the BJP when it was in power in these states," he
leader added.
Apart from this, the BJP is asking its party cadres to compile full
information about atrocities on dalits at district levels.
This information will be later published in the form of a booklet that
will be used to expose the pro-dalit claims of the Mayawati
government.

Mayawati orders CB-CID probe into death of Dalit girls
ITGD Bureau | Lucknow, January 12, 2011 | Updated 21:57 IST

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday ordered CB-CID
probe into death of two Dalit sisters, who were allegedly burnt alive
in Moradabad district in December.

"Two girls Geeta and Neetu died in Moradabad due to burn injuries and
five persons were arrested in this connection. But as varying
statements are coming with regard to the incident the CM has ordered a
CB-CID probe," cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters
in Lucknow.

The duo were allegedly burnt alive in Kothiwal Nagar area of Moradabad
district on December 18 by a mob protesting against a double murder in
which their brother was accused.

An FIR was later lodged against 12 people, of which five were arrested.

The victims' mother Rajo had claimed that a mob gathered outside her
house on January 18 and set it ablaze. While she escaped unhurt, her
daughters Gita (22) and Neetu (20) were burnt alive in the ensuing
fire.

Brother of the victims Rakesh, who worked as a sweeper here, is
accused of killing a woman and her 10-year-old daughter in a robbery
attempt on December 9.

[ZESTCaste] BJP accused of dividing Dalits

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/article1082545.ece

GULBARGA, January 12, 2011
BJP accused of dividing Dalits
Special Correspondent

The Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (Sagar) has accused the political parties
like the BJP of dividing Dalits and pitting them against each other
for their political ends.

Stating that the clash between two groups of Dalits in Nilur village
in which nearly 20 Dalits were injured was an aftermath of the zilla
and taluk panchayat elections, senior Dalit leader Arjun Bhadre and
district convener of DSS Suresh Hadimani accused the BJP of fomenting
discontent among Dalits by sowing seeds of mistrust.

Clash

Addressing presspersons in Gulbarga on Tuesday, Mr. Bhadre and Mr.
Hadimani alleged that the BJP had conspired with 'caste' Hindus in the
village to divide Dalits and weaken a case of attack on a Dalit colony
in Nilur a decade ago. They accused three 'caste' Hindus of the
village, who were accused in the case, of attacking the Dalit colony
and being directly responsible for the clash between the Dalit
factions on January 4.

Mr. Bhadre said that M.Y. Patil, former MLA, and his sons were
fuelling division among the Dalits in the village. The three persons
accused in the attack on the Dalit colony in 2000 had earlier tried to
influence the Dalit witnesses in the case by offering them money to
turn hostile. "When the Dalit witnesses rejected the offer, they
conspired with the BJP leaders, including M.Y. Patil, to divide the
Dalits and attack those who were witness in the case," he said.

Mr. Hadimani said that a small group of Dalits who were close to the
BJP, led by gram panchayat president Krishna Bilkal, attacked Pundalik
and other Dalits who refused to toe the line of the 'upper' castes in
the village on January 4 when they went to the house of one
Hanumantharao Malipatil to release a nine-year-old Dalit boy who had
been detained in the house.

A mob led by Krishna Bilkal and others attacked Mr. Pundalik and other
Dalits, including women, and inflicted serious injuries. "Later, they
inflicted simple injuries on themselves and got admitted to a private
hospital in Gulbarga to book a false complaint against the Dalits whom
they had attacked," he alleged.

The police have registered three cases against both the Dalit groups.
Mr. Hadimani said that the police, instead of blindly booking the
case, should investigate the case impartially and booked a case
against those responsible for the attack on the Dalits.

Police urged to investigate the case of attack on Dalits impartially

CB-CID to probe Dalit sisters' death
Express News Service Posted online: Thu Jan 13 2011, 03:58 hrs
Lucknow : The state government has ordered a CB-CID probe into the
deaths of two Dalit sisters whose charred bodies were found in their
Moradabad home last month.

The government's decision was announced by Cabinet Secretary Shashank
Shekhar Singh at a press conference here today. Earlier, the National
Commission for Scheduled Castes had summoned the DIG and the DM of
Moradabad on January 10 and ordered them to re-investigate the case.

According to a release issued by the state government, criminals
looted the house of one Gagneja on December 9, 2010. Gagneja and his
daughter Sania were killed in the incident.

The police named Rajesh Balmiki and Rakesh Balimki as the accused.
They were arrested later, the release said. Local residents held
demonstrations, two hours after which smoke was seen coming out from a
house. The charred bodies of the two sisters were found inside.

Rajo Devi, their mother, lodged an FIR against Pankaj Gangneja and
other nine persons, the release said.
